Politics
Hamas was democratically elected in the Palestinian legislative elections in January 2006. In those elections, Hamas won a significant majority in the
Palestinian
Legislative Council, winning 74 of 132 seats, surpassing the Fatah party, which had dominated Palestinian politics since the Oslo Accords.
However, conflicts arose between Hamas and Fatah, leading to a de facto territorial division:
Hamas controls the Gaza Strip and Fatah controls parts of the West Bank. |
